our story

our story

It all began with a passion for flavor and a dream to create more than just food—an experience. From our humble beginnings as a food truck serving burgers with heart, to becoming a local hotspot with a speakeasy twist, our journey has been all about bringing people together over great food and unforgettable moments. Every step we’ve taken is fueled by a love for craft, creativity, and community.

We started with a food truck and a dream—to serve burgers and BBQ crafted with heart, soul, and Southern flavor.

After more than a decade in the restaurant business, we discovered our true inspiration in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, where barbecue is more than food—it’s friendship, family, and fire-cooked tradition.

We began by sharing our food at backyard gatherings and small events. With every meal, our passion grew—and so did our following. That support led us from pop-ups and catering to what we are today: a local food truck serving Burgers, BBQ, and Sandwiches The Wright Way.

Rooted in Lowcountry influence and seasoned with New England swagger, our food tells a story of craft, care, and community. We believe in doing things The Wright Way—no shortcuts, no compromises—just great food, good vibes, and even better company.

The Journey Begins

What started as backyard cooks and late nights around a smoker quickly turned into something bigger. Owner Tyler Wright began serving food under the name BootLeg BBQ, fueled by a passion for bold flavor, hard work, and doing things the Wright Way — a lesson passed down from his father. With a food truck and a growing community behind him, Tyler brought smash burgers, smoked wings, and BBQ to streets, breweries, and events across Connecticut.

FROM TRUCK TO TABLE

After years on the road and overwhelming local support, The Wright Way Burgers & BBQ found a permanent home at 3835 Whitney Avenue in Hamden. The brick-and-mortar restaurant marked a new chapter — the same handcrafted food, the same standards, now served in a space built for the community that helped make it possible.

MEET THE FAMILY

What started as one man, a smoker, and a food truck quickly became a family effort. The Wright Way isn’t backed by investors or corporations — it’s built by hands-on work, long nights, and the people who’ve been there from the start.

Founder & Pitmaster

TYLER WRIGHT

From backyard cooks to food truck lines to a full restaurant in Hamden, Tyler built The Wright Way on one simple principle passed down from his father: do it Wright, or don’t do it at all. Every burger, every rack, every plate still runs through that mindset.
